Two women have managed to avoid incarceration after orchestrating a series of thefts totaling £15,000 (about $19,021) in alcohol from various Tesco stores, as reported by Nottinghamshire Live on Monday.

The duo, Amanda Cunningham (44) and Gemma Beeby (39), carried out their criminal activities between March 16 and July 3 last year, targeting eight Tesco locations in Alfreton, Clowne, Hucknall, Kettering, Kimberley, Mansfield, Mickleover and Oakham. Their exploits extended beyond Tesco, including an incident involving the theft of alcohol and detergent from a Sainsbury’s in Kimberley, per Nottinghamshire Live.

During their spree, one individual specialized in entering stores, filling shopping trolleys with spirits and removing security tags before making a swift exit. According to the news outlet, the other played the role of the getaway driver waiting outside in a car.

On June 13, the pair reportedly reached their criminal peak by pilfering £1,403.35 ($1,779.67) worth of alcohol from a Tesco Express in Mansfield.

Cunningham faces charges of 18 thefts, three attempted thefts and two common assaults received an 18-month suspended prison sentence, coupled with a nine-month drug rehabilitation program and a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement. In the U.K., a suspended sentence allows the offender to avoid prison, provided they refrain from committing additional offenses and adhere to the imposed requirements. Beeby, admitting to 12 thefts, received a 12-month suspended sentence and a 25-day rehabilitation activity requirement.

Both were also directed to pay a £187 ($237.22) victim surcharge.

PC Dave Myers from the Nottinghamshire Police expressed gratitude to store staff for their collaboration in bringing the culprits to justice.

“I’d like to thank the staff at the various stores for their assistance in putting Cunningham and Beeby before the courts,” Myers said in Nottinghamshire Live’s report. “In Cunningham’s case, not only did she steal thousands of pounds worth of products, she also assaulted staff who challenged her in the aisle.”

“Shop staff go to work to pay their way in society, earn a living and provide good customer service. They absolutely do not deserve to fall victim to such selfless and brazen criminality.”
