Last Tuesday officers responded to a call on Madeira Beach relating to a fishing boat with an allegedly drunk Florida man unconscious behind the wheel. The boater can be seen speeding through the swimming area of a Pinellas County beach. Marine deputies were able to stop the man who appeared to be intoxicated.

Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office helicopter located the boat. The driver appeared to be  “unconscious and slumped over at the helm” while speeding through the swimming area of Madeira Beach with swimmers present according to a statement given by Sergeant Sinni of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office.

Marine deputies were able to stop the boat and question the driver. There was also an unresponsive passenger onboard the boat.

Sergeant Sinni said, “As contact was made, the operator of the vessel was conscious but visibly disoriented and confused and had bloodshot, glassy eyes.”

A deputy asked the driver, “How much have you had to drink.”

He responded, “We don’t have no alcohol.”

The deputy said, “I’m looking at an empty beer can.”

The man looked down and remarked, “S—.”

The boater did not appear to know his location when questioned by the officers. He told deputies that he parked at the Alafia River, off US Highway 41. The Alafia River runs into Tampa Bay, while Madeira Beach is on the other side of St. Petersburg, north of St. Pete Beach.

The man believed his location may be far off and stated, “Right now I think we’re way out of the way.”

After being escorted to shore, the boater reportedly performed a field sobriety test which he performed poorly. Deputies arrested him for Boating Under the Influence (BUI). There were no reported injuries as a result of the incident for passengers or nearby swimmers.
