Last Sunday, an allegedly drunk elephant injured at least two people after going on a rampage near Khaldang. The lone animal stole some of the locals’ homebrew which set it into a frenzy.
Two individuals were injured while attempting to stop the elephant from destroying the village. One of the individuals had his ribs broken and was rushed to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. The other, a woman, is reportedly recuperating at the Resubelpara CHC and is “out of danger.”
Local officials indicated that the elephant came down from the hills and was headed towards Assam. While in the area, it caught the scent of the locals’ homebrew and rushed into the village. After drinking the alcohol, the elephant is said to have lost control and gone on a rampage. Along with injuring at least two people, it also damaged houses.
Elephants are known to be attracted to the scent of alcohol when fermenting. Over the years there have been several incidents where giant pachyderms overindulged and caused a ruckus. Last year in India, a herd of elephants pilfered a local alcohol known as mahua that is made from flowering trees and passed out at the scene from over-imbibing.
“The person from Assam was referred to Goalpara before he was sent to GMCH in Guwahati owing to the extent of his injuries. He is currently undergoing treatment. The woman was shifted to Resubelpara CHC where she is undergoing treatment and is said to be out of danger,” said deputy commissioner of NGH, K Mitali Chandra, as reported by The Shillong Times.
Wildlife officials were informed of the dangerous animal and were able to confirm it had left the area. The drunk elephant is hopefully unharmed and not suffering from too bad of a hangover.
