On Tuesday The Daily Mirror reported that a Ryan Air flight to Spain made an emergency landing because two men allegedly opened a bottle of duty-free Disaronno midflight.

The flight was from Manchester in the United Kingdom to Alicante, Spain, and ended up landing in Barcelona after flight attendants claimed to have discovered the two men opening up the bottle of Amaretto.

On the ground, passengers witnessed two riot vans parked on the tarmac. The individuals were escorted off the plane by security in a video uploaded to social media and the Mirror reported it received 21,700 likes and over 1,230 comments.

“Always the Brits,” a user quipped in response.

Some individuals expressed they thought the airline went a bit too far in the comments section.

“Give over. That’s all they’ve done? Thousands of pounds just because they’ve opened a bottle of Disaronno?”

Others leaped to the Ryan Air’s defense.

“You are not allowed to drink duty-free on the plane. Simple concept to grasp — don’t disobey flight attendants,” a user commented. “Complete idiots — I mean the people commenting in the video they did nothing wrong.”

It appears Ryan Air’s response might to the alleged incident be justified, given the fact that multiple accounts of alcohol-fueled violence aboard planes have made their way to recent media headlines.

In July, a man was stabbed with a broken wine bottle aboard a British Airways flight en route to St. Lucia. He alleged that the flight crew allowed men to drink alcohol to excess on the plane.

A woman ended up suing a different airline, Delta, claiming that during a flight a drunk off-duty pilot groped and kissed her. The lawsuit was filed in November, and she alleges the flight attendants did not intervene.

Thankfully, nobody was harmed in the latest incident and the only repercussions for the passengers aboard involved a flight delay.
