Cuban rum brand, Eminente has recently announced a new rum to its lineup – a 10 year old expression dubbed Gran Reserva Edition N°1. The latest edition will join the brand’s flagship range including the 7-year-old Reserva and Amber Claro.
The Gran Reserva Edition N°1 is the creation of Cuba’s youngest Maestro Ronero, César Martí. The rum master distiller took inspiration from 19th-century Cuban rum making, which is often considered the archetype of rum in the nation. César Martí has added a new degree of complexity to Cuban rum with his exploratory aging and blending of aguardientes (sugarcane-based rum)
Gran Reserva Edition N°1 is made with 80% aguardiente blended with a light Cuban rum that was aged a minimum of 10 years in white oak ex-whisky barrels. The blend is then finished in French oak barrels for three months before being bottled at 43.5% ABV.
According to Spirits Business, Martí commented, “Gran Reserva Edition N°1 is the perfect balance of art, science, magic and talent in blending and aging, giving it a unique integrity and character that takes it to a new dimension – it is a genuine expression of Cuba.”
Eminente describes the Gran Reserva Edition N°1 aromas as “roasted coffee, red fruits, flowers, honey and vanilla”. On the palate there is notes of “dried apricot, orange blossom, sandalwood, hazelnut and chilli pepper.” According to the brand the rum has a spicy finish that contains notes of “sichuan pepper, caramel, pine sap and saffron.”
Camille de Dominicis, co-founder and managing director of Eminente, said to Spirits Business: “We wanted to create something with real depth, craftsmanship and age that shows just what César is capable of creating.
“With some of the oldest aguardientes at his fingertips and his pioneering aging techniques, he has captured the essence of what Cuban rum stands for and just how extraordinary our rum at Eminente can be with additional aging.”
Eminente rum is made with sustainability in mind and this bottle like the brand’s others includes environmental elements. The labels are made using cotton by-products from the textile industry and the bottle stopper is made of sustainable cork and wood coming from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) forests.
Cuban Rum enthusiasts who reside outside of the US can procure the Gran Reserva Edition N°1 online or in select stores in the UK for an RRP of £75 (US$91). Americans who wish to get a taste of the 10-year-old rum will have to travel outside the country because of the embargo on Cuba.
