‘Next They’ll Be Outlawing Coffee’: Republican-Proposed Cold Beer Ban in This State Aims to Save Lives

On Thursday WSMV reported that a Republican-proposed cold beer ban within the state of Tennessee is getting quite a bit of buzz — no pun intended. In addition to banning cold alcoholic drinks at convenience stores, the ban also intends to implement a limit to the number of drinks people can have at on-premise establishments, like bars and restaurants.
“When you are affected in a situation by a drunk driver you look at things differently,” Rep. Ron Gant said, according to WSMV.
Gant proposed the legislation and reflected on the life-altering event of being hit by a drunk driver. Despite his personal experience, the Republican member of the Tennessee House of Representatives for District 94 insists the Tennessee Prevention of Drunk Driving Act, or HB 2845, isn’t about him.
Though he is aware the bill “isn’t popular,” he insists anybody who has experienced a death in the family because of the actions of a drunk driver would understand, according to WSMV.
Other politicians did not take too kindly to the bill — including Gant’s fellow Republicans.
“Next they’ll be outlawing coffee, I guess,” quipped Lt. Gov. Randy McNally.
Those across party lines had stronger opinions about the initiative.
“I think it’s ridiculous that we are moving with more urgency to ban cold beer than we are to ban weapons of war from our street,” Rep. Justin Jones stated about the legislation initiative. Jones is a member of the Democratic party who represents District 52, which encompasses parts of Nashville.
On Feb. 15, ABC News reported that almost 5,000 people in the U.S. have already died from gun violence in 2024.
Media headlines have chronicled a shooting, which took place Wednesday during the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl parade. The New York Times reported on Friday that the shooting left one person dead and 22 injured. Two teenagers have been charged.
The shooting resulted in the death of Elizabeth Galvan, a D.J. and radio host who was described as “the life of a party” by her friends.
The Guardian reported on Friday that Taylor Swift pledged a donation of $100,000 to the shooting victims.
