28 Black-Owned Spirits Brands to Raise a Glass to Black History Month With
February is Black History Month, an excellent period of reflection for our country on the success, trials and tribulations of many Black Americans in this country. As far as the spirits industry is concerned, some of the most exciting tequilas, whiskeys, gins and rums are Black-owned spirits brands.
Major spirits conglomerate Diageo understands this and demonstrated its support with the development of Pronghorn. Pronghorn’s mission is to diversify the spirits industry because the company understands that for the industry to thrive, recognizing the community it serves is critical.
In February 2023, Pronghorn launched an #AllBlackBar program, meant to offer support to the numerous Black-owned spirits brands. The incubator launched programs and offered professional opportunities to Black professionals launching their own spirits brands.
11 Black-Owned Whiskey Brands to Support
Uncle Nearest

See What The Critics Think | Buy It Now
Few whiskey brands have experienced a more impressive and rapid ascent to superstardom than Uncle Nearest.
Yet, the brand’s success was a long time coming. Uncle Nearest’s inception was derived from an individual once lost to history: Nearest Green. Nearest Green was a former enslaved man who was the first master distiller at Jack Daniel’s. Though the brand’s founder, Fawn Weaver, attests that Green and Jasper “Jack” Daniel had a camaraderie, his story and contributions were erased from the wildly successful Tennessee whiskey brand — until now.
Uncle Nearest’s story was revitalized when Weaver read a New York Times article about Nearest Green. She visited the brand’s facilities in Lynchburg, Tennessee, and wanted to see if his legacy would be honored at Jack Daniel’s.
“I went on three tours of the distillery, and nothing, not a mention of him,” Weaver shared with The New York Times.
The entrepreneur decided to take matters into her own hands and ended up founding Uncle Nearest. She hired Victoria Eady Butler, a descendant of Green, to be master blender. The whiskey brand has earned impressive sales and critical acclaim in its infancy and even offers a Raise The Bar Mentorship Program, which pairs key players in the beverage industry with up-and-coming talent to help develop their careers.
The brand’s 100-proof offering, Uncle Nearest 1856, features a fantastic profile of pecan, toffee, and a sweet, nutty finish. It clocks in at 100 proof and has an average price of $56, according to Wine-Searcher.
Brough Brothers

Brough Brothers opened in 2021 as the first Black-owned bourbon distillery in Kentucky. Three brothers: Victor (CEO), Bryson (COO and Kentucky’s first black master distiller), and Chris Yarbrough (CMO) helm the brand, and these spirits entrepreneurs are hoping to inspire other Black professionals in the spirits industry to venture into the spirits trade.
“There’s been so much passed historically, where Black people were involved with the actual manufacturing of the process and behind the scenes [in bourbon], but never ownership,” Victor shared with the Louisville Courier-Journal.
This brand is all about changing the narrative about what it means to be a bourbon drinker, and are hoping their bourbon will appeal to a more diverse customer base instead of the “typical” bourbon drinker — middle-aged, older white males.
Brough Brother’s flagship bourbon is distilled from a mashbill of 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley and is bottled at a modest proof of 82. The brand cites floral aromas, with roses and apples, interlaced with nutmeg. The palate is chock full of tree fruit flavors, with zingy ginger. Brough Brothers Bourbon has an average price of $29, according to Wine-Searcher.
Woodson Whiskey

Charles Woodson played in the NFL from 1998 to 2015 after being drafted by the Raiders out of Michigan, where he became the only primarily defensive player ever to win the coveted Heisman Trophy, an honor he held alone until last year, when Travis Hunter won the award.
Besides Woodson’s lengthy list of accomplishments on the field, the athlete launched Woodson Whiskey in 2021. The brand implements an “accelerated aging process” by exposing the liquid to ultrasonic waves. Woodson Whiskey was brought on as the Official Bourbon of the Las Vegas Raiders. This marked the first time a football player’s company became an official spirits sponsor of an NFL Team.
“I used to jokingly say that Woodson Bourbon Whiskey was the official bourbon of Raider Nation but now I can say it with my chest,” Woodson declared in a news release. “Woodson Bourbon Whiskey is the official bourbon of the Las Vegas Raiders and Allegiant Stadium.”
The brand’s flagship whiskey is accelerated-aged for six months, then finished at Woodson’s San Diego Distillery in French Oak Cabernet wine barrels used for Woodson’s Napa Valley Wine brand.
Eric LeGrand Whiskey

See What The Critics Think | Buy It Now
Eric LeGrand is nothing short of an inspiration — both at his Alma Mater, Rutgers, and around the world. LeGrand played football for the academic institution and suffered a catastrophic injury during a 2010 game, one that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
LeGrand pivoted and became a motivational speaker and launched his proprietary whiskey brand with Brian Axelrod in March 2023. Proceeds from each sale go to the Christopher & Dana Reeves Foundation, a nonprofit with the goal of curing spinal cord injuries.
LeGrand and Rutgers Athletics signed a multi-year partnership deal in July 2023, one that resulted in his bourbon selling during Rutgers Athletics games. Rutgers Associate Athletic Director Lisa Tirrell called LeGrand “one of the greatest ambassadors for Rutgers Athletics” and cited LeGrand’s bourbon brand’s philanthropic efforts as a major force for good.
The brand’s flagship bourbon has an ABV of 44% and is priced at $62.99, according to the brand. With aromas of honey, creamed corn, butterscotch and vanilla bean, LeGrand’s bourbon is an easy-drinking pour that goes to a great cause.
Gentleman’s Cut Bourbon

See What The Critics Think
This next bourbon is owned by none other than Golden State Warriors point guard and four-time NBA Champion, Stephen Curry. The bourbon dropped in May 2023, and Curry shared that this bourbon has been “years in the making.” The bourbon is distilled from a high rye mashbill, with 75% corn, 21% rye and 4% malted barley.
It spent five years aging in charred new white oak barrels and was bottled at 90 proof. The bourbon spent time maturing in new white oak barrels and has a suggested retail price of $79.99 for a 750ml bottle.
Critics have been somewhat split on Gentleman’s Cut, but Jim Vorel of Paste was a big fan. Vorel complimented the bourbon on being distilled and aged in Boone County, Kentucky, due to the celebrity behind the release. Oftentimes, celebs gravitate to larger producers for their brands, yet Curry maintains he was intimately evolved in the production process from start to finish.
Vorel cites a caramel-coated biscuit aroma, with a palate that is full-flavored with grassy flavors, brown sugar, and wheat bread interlaced with brown sugar. He claims the finish is full of leather, complexity and a bit of earthy funk.

Fort Mosé is a whiskey that pays homage to the first free black town in the U.S., was recognized in 1738. American spirits maker Victor G. Harvey Sr. was captivated by this story and decided to create a whiskey that pays homage to the legendary town.
“When I first got into the industry in 2017 there were very few, if any, Black people with their own brands,” Harvey said in a statement. “I knew I didn’t just want to put a name on something as a private label, but wanted to create, make and bottle our own products.”
Fort Mosé Whiskey spent four years aging and has aromas of cocoa, custard, cinnamon, caramel and barley. The whiskey is priced at $55.99 per bottle on the brand’s website.
Birdie Brown

See What The Critics Think | Buy It Now
The Birdie Brown brand pays homage to an African American woman who homesteaded in Montana. When the country was deep in the throes of Prohibition, Brown distilled hooch and essentially operated a grain-to-glass distillery.
The modern brand researched the ingredients Birdie used and implements wheat grown on a farm in Montana. The brand uses an unorthodox mashbill for its wheat whiskey that includes oats.
Birdie Brown was founded by the Henderson Spirits Group, a company that is owned by Alan Henderson, a 12-year NBA veteran. Henderson’s mission is to “diversify the bar,” according to the brand’s website, and with Birdie Brown and his other brand, Tom Bullock’s, he intends to do just that.
Birdie Brown has two spirits in its portfolio, Birdie Brown Plain Hooch and Birdie Brown Straight Wheat Whiskey. The Plain Hooch retails for $39.99 and the Wheat Whiskey retails for $49.99.
Greenwood Whiskey

Greenwood Whiskey was founded in 2018, and the brand was inspired by the Greenwood District of “Black Wall Street.” This part of Tulsa, Oklahoma, drew Black entrepreneurs and served as a cultural hub during the early 1900s.
The brand was founded by Che Bailey, Sheldon Johns Hairrs and James Roach “KG” Gordon, a group of friends with a shared passion to continue telling the story of this historic neighborhood. The brand claims Greenwood Whiskey is a celebration and nod to “the trailblazers who paved the way.”
Greenwood has three whiskeys within its portfolio, Greenwood Rye Whiskey Green Label, Greenwood 1906, Greenwood Celebration Caramel Whiskey, Greenwood Rye Whiskey Juneteenth Edition and Greenwood Whiskey Homecoming Edition. Greenwood Rye Whiskey Green Label is affordably priced at $32.99.

Boxing fans should pay attention to Floyd Mayweather’s Good Money Canadian Whisky. Mayweather dropped Good Money Canadian Whisky in October 2023 alongside his champagne brand, Le Bon Argent. His motives were fairly simple:

Good Money Canadian Whisky has two whiskies in its portfolio, a 5-year and 10-year expression. Good Money claims its 5-year-old whisky has spiced and tropical fruit aromas and refers to it as a “daily drinker.”

We would be remiss if we did not feature Beyoncé Knowles-Carter’s SirDavis American Whisky on this list. The whiskey dropped in August and was possibly the most hyped celebrity whiskey release of the year, thanks to Beyoncé immense fame. The artist joined forces with Moët-Hennessy and named the rye whiskey brand after her great-grandfather on her father’s side, Davis Hogue, who was a moonshiner during Prohibition.
“When I discovered that my great-grandfather had been a moonshine man, it felt like my love for whisky was fated,” Beyoncé expressed. “SirDavis is a way for me to pay homage to him, uniting us through a new shared legacy.”
Top-notch talent was brought on for the production process of SirDavis, with the brand bringing on Dr. Bill Lumsden — nicknamed the “Einstein of Scotch Whisky” — to head up the production process.
Lumsden chose to work with a mashbill of 51% rye and 59% malted barley and finish the rye in sherry casks. The whisky is bottled at 44% ABV and has a suggested retail price of $89.

Jordan, in addition to NBA team owners Emilia Fazzalari and Wyc Grousbec, Jeanie Buss, and Wes Edens, have built up this luxury agave brand that has blanco, reposado, añejo, gold, extra añejo and añejo cristalino expressions in its portfolio.
Though the brand is no stranger to releasing bottles with extravagant price tags that might set you back as much as $1,500, we recommend giving Cincoro Blanco a go. With an average price of $76, according to Wine-Searcher, the tequila has a peppery nose with creaminess and earthy notes on the palate, per a review by Christopher Null of Drinkhacker. The finish is said to be delicately sweet, which tempers all the notes of spice.

The brand’s Joven Tequila achieved a perfect score from critic Dan Trares at 31 Whiskey. Trares was particularly partial to the mixture of sweet citrus and earth on the nose, coupled with the grassy lemon flavors intermingled with dried fruit — presumably from the tequila’s sherry finishing process.
The tequila has a suggested retail price of $44.99 and clocks in at 40% ABV.
Gran Coramino Tequila

Kevin Hart’s Gran Coramino Tequila brand launched in May 2022. The comedian joined forces with 11th-generation tequila producer Juan Domingo Beckman, and the project took two years to complete. Hart decided to finish Gran Coramino in Cabernet barrels, and the brand’s debut expression was a cristalino.
Presently, Gran Coramino features a cristalino, reposado and añejo. The brand’s liquid is sourced from hand-picked Blue Weber agaves. The brand’s reposado, cristalino and añejo expressions sell for average prices of $41, $55 and $106, according to Wine-Searcher.
The tequila brand additionally hosts a great philanthropic record. In April, Gran Coramino hit a $1 million milestone in donating funds to Black and Latinx small business funds.
“As an entrepreneur myself, I’ve seen how early financial support can impact the long-term success of the business,” Hart said of the program. “The Coramino Fund was created to provide support to some of the hardest working people out there — entrepreneurs and small business owners.”

Ten to One Rum claims its rums are a strict departure from “pirates and plantations,” and the brand is all about building itself from the authenticity of Caribbean culture without sticking to tropes and caricatures. “One from ten leaves nought.”
The statement is about unity, togetherness and “beauty in the blend,” which Ten to One Rum stands by. Marc Farrell, the founder of Ten to One Rum, considers himself to be a “student of rum,” due to his Caribbean heritage. After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, the Minnesota Gin brand formed a foundation aiming to address racial inequity and provide justice in Minneapolis.
“From all this, we had a choice: go back to business as usual or build something better in the ashes of what was,” Chris and Shanelle Montana said at the time.
The Du Nord Foundation has offered financial support to over 12,000 people across the globe, and the organization rebuilt small businesses owned by minorities and provided food and essential supplies in Minneapolis after the civil unrest in 2020 and during the COVID-19 pandermic.
