‘Airports Are Not Nightclubs’: Flight Forced to Divert Following Trio’s Disruptive, Alcohol-Fueled Behavior

Three individuals are facing possible fines for their alleged unruly conduct on a flight to Indonesia, which resulted in the plane being diverted to Darwin, Australia. According to Australian news outlet ABC, the incident took place when a 42-year-old man and two 20-year-old men allegedly consumed duty-free alcohol and vaped while onboard.

As per the Australian Federal Police (AFP), the three men appeared to have become intoxicated during the flight, prompting the crew to ask them to vacate their exit row seats out of concern that they might not be able to assist in case of an emergency. Although they initially refused, the men eventually complied and moved to other seats.

Despite the seat relocation, the situation escalated when the men allegedly began consuming duty-free alcohol they had purchased earlier. Their disruptive behavior eventually caught the attention of fellow passengers, with one of the men even allegedly vaping in his seat, ABC reported.

Consequently, the aircraft captain decided to divert the flight to Darwin, fearing that the group’s conduct could worsen. AFP officers entered the cabin upon landing and escorted the three individuals off the plane without incident, per the report. Video footage of the event shows other passengers applauding as the men exit the plane.

Later, the trio was cautioned by police and released. However, they may still face fines for their alleged offensive and disorderly behavior, as well as for consuming alcohol and smoking on board an aircraft, per ABC.

Darwin Airport Commander Superintendent Greg Davis emphasized that offensive and disruptive behavior on planes and in airports will not be tolerated, as it affects the safety and comfort of other passengers.

“We again remind the public that airports are not nightclubs,” David added, according to ABC.
