In a shocking incident that unfolded on the night of Feb. 15 in Gurugram, India, a group of over 30 individuals reportedly targeted a local liquor store amidst a dispute over attempting to take alcohol without payment.
According to the Deccan Herald, the brazen attack, documented by surveillance cameras within the establishment, unfolded when six individuals initially entered the shop under the pretext of purchasing alcohol. However, their seemingly routine transaction took a turn when, after procuring five bottles, they paid for only one, prompting a dispute with the store’s attendant.
The situation escalated rapidly, per the report, with the agitated group assaulting the salesman and subsequently demanding an extortion amount of Rs 5 lakh (about $6,000) from the store owner, Rajesh Kumar.
“When the salesman refused to give them bottles, the accused beat him up and said in a threatening tone that he should tell the owner to pay them Rs 5 lakh extortion to run this shop,” Kumar said in a complaint.
“Hearing the noise, I came to the counter where the accused began abusing me and threatened to kill me.”
The entire episode took a more sinister turn as an additional 25 individuals joined the fray, wielding sticks and sharp weapons, Deccan Herald noted. The shop owner’s associate, Sachin Kataria, along with colleagues Abhimanyu and Deepak, bore the brunt of the brutal assault, sustaining critical injuries.
“In the meantime, more than 25 people also entered the shop and joined the six youths,” the store owner added, per the report. “They attacked my partner Sachin Kataria and his two associates Abhimanyu and Deepak with sticks and sharp weapons. They were injured critically and rushed to the hospital.”
“The accused fled after leaving their two motorcycles on the spot and then the police was called.”
Kumar promptly filed a detailed police complaint, leading to the registration of a first information report (FIR) at the Shivaji Nagar Police Station. Charges were filed under Sections 147, 149, and 506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which address involvement in riots, being part of an unlawful assembly and engaging in criminal intimidation.
Inspector Sandeep Kumar, the Station House Officer (SHO) at Shivaji Nagar police station, has assured the public that efforts are underway to swiftly identify and apprehend the culprits responsible for the act.
