On Wednesday, three individuals in Kushtia, Bangladesh, lost their lives allegedly due to drinking locally distilled bootleg liquor, as reported by The Financial Express.
According to the news outlet, the deceased were brought to the Kushtia General Hospital between midnight and 5 a.m. Sanwar Hossain, overseeing the Kushtia General Hospital police camp, addressed the circumstances surrounding the individuals’ deteriorating health, stating that all three fell seriously ill after consuming what is believed to be an “excessive amount” of alcohol.
Meanwhile, SM Tanvir Arafat, Superintendent of Kushtia Police, declared an ongoing investigation into the incident. The cause of the tragic deaths remains under scrutiny, and clarity is expected to emerge post-autopsy.
Bootleg alcohol comes in various forms, including smuggled liquor, knockoff brands, moonshine and homemade brews. Occasionally, bootleggers may opt for inexpensive materials in their manufacturing process to enhance profits, despite the severe health risks involved. One such example is methanol, a toxic chemical similar to antifreeze.
In January, a group of locals in Cape Town, South Africa, experienced unusually severe hangovers linked to bootleg liquor consumption. Authorities arrested two individuals thought to be behind the distribution of the illicit alcohol following the discovery of a secret manufacturing facility containing empty bottles of popular brands, sealed gin caps and branded boxes.
In September 2023, one person died and seven others were poisoned at a wedding party in Uzbekistan after unknowingly consuming bootleg vodka. A year prior, gin found to be laced with excessive amounts of methanol was behind the deaths of at least 17 people in Uganda.
