On Saturday, 18 individuals were admitted to a hospital after consuming illicit homemade alcohol in Bandung, Indonesia. According to news outlet Free Malaysia Today (FMT), 12 were reported dead, while four remain in critical condition.
The incident took place following a wedding gathering, where the victims, whose ages ranged from 16 to 45, consumed the bootleg liquor. Shortly after, the Subang District General Hospital found itself inundated with 18 victims exhibiting symptoms of “alcohol intoxication,” per FMT. 11 of them could not be saved, and one individual passed away upon arrival at the hospital.
While four of the individuals are in critical condition, one appears to show signs of recovery, FMT stated. Meanwhile, a 13th victim was reported to have died after family members requested an early discharge from the hospital, although a spokesperson was unable to confirm this information with the news outlet.
Subang Police Chief Ariek Indra Sentanu reported that a suspect believed to be associated with the incident has been arrested.
This unfortunate incident is only the latest in a trend of fatalities linked to bootleg liquor production in regions where alcohol is illegal or difficult to obtain. In September, an eerily similar event took place when one individual died and seven were poisoned after unknowingly drinking counterfeit vodka at a wedding party in Uzbekistan. Two months prior, six Nigerians died after drinking locally made gin allegedly served to them by a friend.
