Volans Tequila Hops on the Still-Strength Trend With ‘Old School’ 106-Proof Blanco

Volans Tequila is expanding its additive-free roster with a scorching 106-proof Still Strength Blanco.

Still-strength tequila — literally, bottled straight from the still — has witnessed an unexpected resurgence over the past few months. Recent launches like Pasote 110-Proof and Suerte 104-Proof have proven consumer interest in these fiery, often limited-edition releases.

For Volans, the secret ingredient is a newly constructed still that ferments agave fibers alongside mosto, a pulpy grape juice secreted during the wine-making process. According to the brand, the resulting spirit balances a “robust” palate with an “old-school character.”

“We want our still strength to have the most authentic and traditional flavor. We wanted a tequila like my grandfather used to drink,” said Cristina Allen, co-owner and operator of Volans Tequila. “Fermenting with the agave fibers gives that complexity we are looking for.”

Within the industry, Volans Master Distiller Felipe Camarena is frequently referred to as the “mad scientist.” For good reason; his agave shredder, dubbed “Igor,” and his mechanical tahona, dubbed “Frankenstein,” are ramshackle inventions built from spare parts lying around his scrapyard.

Since being founded in 2007, his El Pandillo Distillery has been ranked #2 worldwide by Tequila Matchmaker thanks to acclaimed brands like G4, Don Vicente and ArteNOM Selección de 1579.

The price and release date for Volans Still Strength Blanco have yet to be announced, though insider reviews have begun popping up across the Internet.
