Danny McBride is punching his way into the spirits space with a new tequila brand called Don Gato. Don Gato is inspired by a fictional feline-loving luchador created by McBride. Why? Because he’s Danny McBride, of course.
Don Gato features a blanco and reposado expression within its portfolio. The blanco hosts a suggested retail price of $39.99, and the reposado features a suggested retail price of $44.99. Both spirits possess an ABV of 40%.
The “Eastbound and Down” creator and actor brought his comedic talents into focus when promoting the brand by dropping hilarious videos depicting Don Gato, one of which can be viewed below on the tequila brand’s Instagram page.
In the video, McBride pretends to be filming a documentary about the mysterious, cat-loving luchador, who happens to be an expert swordsman as well. Dos Equis’ “Most Interesting Man in the World” better watch his back.
McBride then refers to Don Gato as a “true champion” and then snaps at the Director of Photography (DP), urging him to pan over to McBride and document their “experiences.”
McBride then critiques the DP’s camera skills, urging him to film his “boyfriend,” Don Gato. The spot ends with McBride being his irreverently humorous self, turning straight to the camera and delivering a killer button:
“Maybe Don Gato will be your boyfriend.”
The “Eastbound and Down” actor shared multiple videos chronicling the saga of Don Gato, many of which feature beauty shots of the luchador sipping tequila with his precious pet cat on his lap.

Don Gato shared that its blanco is made from lowland agave, “pure water and raw emotions.” According to Don Gato, its blanco won a Gold Medal at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
Don Gato describes its blanco expression as “fresh and clean,” with aromas of “pear, lime zest and cedar” on the nose of the pour. The Blanco tequila is citrus-based, with a bit of almond cream and spun sugar on the finish.
The additive-free tequila brand shared its reposado has a bit more going on than its younger sibling. The reposado boasts flavors of golden raisin, lemon peel and green apple with a bourbon-oak imbued finish.
Don Gato Tequila shared its fictional origin story on its website, which begs to be re-quoted:
“After the death of his long-time mentor, Don Gato lost his taste for the fight,” the copy reads on the brand’s website. “But not for tequila. Once he avenged El General’s Death, Don Gato sold his car and invested the money into what some would call a pyramid scheme. Lucky for Don Gato, he was closer to the top of the pyramid, so he got a bunch of money.”
Don Gato shares that the luchador “took this money and went to Vegas,” as one often does with money.
“He put half of it on black and busted. It was quite a blow,” the website reads. “The only comfort for Don Gato was that the house provided complimentary drinks. Don Gato ordered tequila. Within moments of ingesting the agave-rich nectar of his homeland, Don Gato felt the strength once again returning to his arms, his legs, his abs. He felt the power. Don Gato rook what remained of his money, minus the two breakfast buffets he had purchased, and once again, he put it all on black. ‘They said, why not red, Don Gato?’ He didn’t answer. Black hit and Don Gato won.”
McBride’s brand shares that Don Gato left and took his winnings to plant an agave field in Jalisco. And thus, Don Gato Tequila was born.
It is admittedly refreshing to see that some celebrities aren’t afraid to get silly with spirits brands, particularly within the agave space.
Matthew McConaughey has no qualms about taking his pants off to sell Pantalones Tequila, and Danny McBride is happy to bring his signature “McBride-ness” to Don Gato.
Either way, within what many would claim to be an oversaturated marketplace of celebrities vying for consumers’ cash, McBride’s take on tequila is admittedly refreshing.
