Tequila Ocho Soars to New Heights With 53% ABV ‘Overproof’ Blanco

The acclaimed team over at Tequila Ocho just released its highest proof expression to date.

Plata Puntas 2023, the latest in the brand’s ongoing “distiller’s cut” series, reaches all the way up to 53% ABV (106-proof) — just two notches short of the legal maximum in the United States.

It’s the latest in a blisteringly high ABV trend. Acclaimed distillers like Suerte, Pasote and Volans have all tossed their hats into the overproof tequila market with limited-edition still-strength releases over the past few months.

Evidently, Tequila Ocho is looking to appease die-hard fans with a different approach. Its new Plata Puntas expression is a blend of two potent batches proofed down to 53% ABV using deep well water sourced near its distillery. The resulting spirit is said to balance a bright, grassy aroma with powerful flavors of overripe agave, green chiles and charred pineapple.

“Tequila Ocho Plata Puntas is not just another overproof tequila, it is an innovation within the tequila world and by its very nature – comprising a very thin cut of distillation – it is produced in very small quantities,” said Jesse Estes, Tequila Ocho Global Brand Ambassador in a press release.

“That, with the extremely high concentration of agave flavor, makes Ocho Puntas perfect for sipping, but also really standing out in tequila cocktails. We should also thank our great friends in the agave spirits community who inspired us as we produced this year’s release.”

Within the industry, Tequila Ocho is known as one of the select few single-estate producers; all agave is grown and harvested on its own land before being processed at a dedicated distillery. Overseen by 5th-generation agave farmer Carlos Camarena, the confirmed additive-free brand has racked up accolades left and right since launching in 2008.

The brand’s Plata Puntas 2023 is now available in select markets across the United States for $74.99.
