Bryan Cranston’s Dos Hombres Mezcal Joins Forces With Modelo Beer on Summery Michelada Showdown

Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are harkening back to their “Breaking Bad” era with a spirited showdown — this time around, however, they’re facing off by way of mezcal and hot sauce in honor of National Michelada Day (Friday).

The Hollywood duo’s Dos Hombres Mezcal has teamed up with the popular beer brand Modelo for a pair of cocktails reinterpreting the beloved classic. Otherwise referred to as a Mexican Bloody Mary, the michelada acts more as a template than a set-in-stone recipe, though you can usually expect some combination of beer, hot sauce and lime. Other common additions include Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, tomato juice, peppers, Tajin and copious salt on the rim.

Thought to have been invented in the 1940s or ’50s, micheladas have experienced a renaissance of sorts in the U.S. over the past few years, thanks in part to popular canned renditions from Budweiser, Modelo and Tecate.

Typically absent from the equation are hard spirits. Dialing up the alcohol content, Paul and Cranston have shot a campaign video in which they each created a michelada of their own featuring Dos Hombres Mezcal, their agave spirits brand launched in 2019.

In between playful barbs, Cranston stirred a yellow-hued “Fiesta Picante Michelada” while Paul conjured a blood-red “Fire and the Smoke.” The exact contents of either recipe have yet to be disclosed, though they’re expected to begin popping up at participating bars throughout the U.S. this summer. If you’re looking for some early guidance in your choice, mezcalero Gregorio Velasco seemed to prefer Paul’s concoction.

Since its debut, Dos Hombres has focused primarily on its flagship Mezcal Joven expression, which is distilled in San Luis del Río, Oaxaca using tahona-crushed agave espadin. Those in search of a collector’s item can also pick up Dos Hombres’ limited-edition Tobala Mezcal, available at a pricy $355.
