Two months after the surprise announcement of her tequila venture, rapper Megan Thee Stallion has given fans a first look at what to expect on liquor store shelves.

In a video posted to Instagram, Megan was seen backstage at a Chicago show carrying a bottle of her tequila, the name and release date of which have yet to be announced. Contained inside a twisted red decanter, the bottle is corked with a gold top that protrudes a shiny heart and sword logo.

Megan first dropped details about the venture during an interview with Adweek in April. In anticipation of her then-upcoming Hot Girl Summer Tour with GloRilla, the “Savage” singer hinted that the tequila launch might coincide with her forthcoming third studio album.

Her recent post is captioned:

Though no brand name can be spotted on the label, Megan’s caption fuels speculation that her tequila might be called “Chicas Divertidas” (“Funny Girls” in English). When the tequila was first announced, sleuths on Reddit discovered that her tour featured a VIP package — also named Chicas Divertidas — that included an exclusive first taste of her spirits brand.

Who’s the Competition?

Over the past few years, celebrity-owned tequila has grown from a trend to an industry-defining standard. Catapulted by the reigning popularity of George Clooney’s Casamigos, we’ve seen everyone from Kendall Jenner to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson get in on the action.

Since the beginning of 2022, agave spirits have been launched by Matthew McConaughey, Lewis Hamilton, character actor Danny Trejo and “Real Housewives of New York” star Erin Lichy. Within the increasingly popular pre-mixed cocktail category, tequila-centric releases have been seen from Jennifer Lopez, Blake Lively and Canelo Álvarez.

Though the market has already reached a point of oversaturation, Megan may be operating in her own lane. Despite being a popular shoutout within the genre, very few rappers have launched tequilas of their own.

Whether it be Jay Z’s D’Ussé Cognac, Drake’s Virginia Black Whiskey or Nicki Minaj’s MYX Fusions wine, we’ve seen the industry’s biggest names foray in other boozy directions. Following Diddy’s highly-publicized departure from DeLeon Tequila, one of the only remaining rapper-owned brands is E-40’s creatively named E. Cuarenta Tequila.

With luck, Megan can leverage the success of her new album into an equally successful (and lucrative) spirits imprint.
