San Antonio-Based Distillery Unveils Tequila-Adjacent ‘Agave Reposado’ In Honor of Texas Independence Day

Maverick Distilling

San Antonio’s Maverick Distilling has unveiled a highly unorthodox agave spirit in honor of Texas Independence Day.

The brand’s new Samuel Maverick Tricentennial Edition Agave Reposado, limited to just 185 bottles, is distilled in-house from organic Blue Weber agave nectar before resting in oak barrels for two years and two months. The bottling embodies a smorgasbord of cultural influences — after all, Texas Independence Day celebrates the state’s schism from Mexico in 1836.

“Agave spirits made in the Lone Star State are the perfect choice for celebrating Texas Independence Day,” said Maverick Distilling Owner and Co-Founder, Kenneth Maverick.

“We had the unique Texan-Mexican-American culture in mind when we produced Samuel Maverick Tricentennial Edition Agave Reposado. This exclusive spirit honors the cradle of Texas Liberty while honoring the Mexican culture and San Antonio’s Western heritage.”

Due to protected designation of origin laws, tequila cannot be called “tequila” nor mezcal “mezcal” unless it’s produced in a handful of authorized Mexican states. As the category balloons in popularity, however, a community of international distillers is taking it upon themselves to replicate the success.

Distillers in California, South Africa and Australia — arid climates with growing conditions similar to Mexico — have begun producing spirits using locally harvested agave. Elsewhere, distillers are importing Mexican-grown agave nectar and processing it locally; upstarts have emerged in Pennsylvania, Missouri, Colorado and Germany. None of these spirits are officially termed “tequila” even though many are distilled using the same ingredients and recipe.

If you’re interested in picking up Maverick Distilling’s twist on the concept, bottles are retailing for $75 each at its distillery in downtown San Antonio.
