Halfway to Margaritaville: 1800 Tequila Finishes Latest Limited-Edition Release in Orange Liqueur Barrels

1800 Tequila is expanding its trapezoidal catalog with an unconventional liqueur-finished release.

On April 1, the brand officially unveiled 1800 GuachiMonton, described as the “first luxury añejo tequila” aged in American and French Oak barrels before resting in orange tequila liqueur casks. The bottling derives its name from Los Guachimontones archeological site, a collection of centuries-old buildings constructed by the Teuchitlán people in the valleys of Jalisco.

“1800 GuachiMonton not only represents the roots of Mexican tradition and culture but also Mexican terroir and ritual,” says Master Distiller and Head of Production, Alex Coronado.

“A nod to the fragrant orange trees surrounding the pyramids of Los Guachimontones and our family-owned distillery, the liquid is inspired by the timeless ritual of plucking fresh oranges to garnish a glass of Añejo. Its decadent and persistent orange citrus flavor profile provides a premium, modern twist to an already luxurious Añejo tasting experience.”

The red ceramic decanter — retailing now for $159.99 — pays homage to the pyramids and red clay found throughout the UNESCO World Heritage site.

Though the final product may not quite resemble a thickened liqueur like Cointreau, expect the bottling to amp up syrupy, sweetened flavors of citrus to unprecedented levels.

Over the years, 1800 has grown quite fond of the limited-edition release format. The brand has collaborated with Keith Haring, Basquiat, Shepard Fairy and more for its ongoing Artists Series catalog and released a set of NFL-cosigned bottles paying homage to the LA Rams and Las Vegas Raiders. At one point, 1800 even released a surrealist NFT that sold online to the tune of $25,000.
