Butterfly Cannon, the U.K. tequila brand that made a splash with colorful flavor infusions, is expanding its catalog with an eight-month ex-bourbon-cask finished reposado.

Dubbed “The Winged King,” the new expression is bottled in a black gloss decanter topped off with a life-sized monarch butterfly statuette. The spirit within blends two distinct production methods. Half of the agave piñas are steam-roasted in walled brick ovens, while the others are cooked using autoclaves.

Butterfly Cannon says that its reposado — available now at $170 — balances aromas of mellow oak and citrus with flavors of agave, warm vanilla, tree nuts, spiced cloves and cinnamon.

“It’s a standout Tequila with striking branding and a unique bottle, and it’s certain to create a buzz in store and really bring a feeling of luxury to the home drinks cabinet. It makes a decadent gift idea for Tequila fans with its premium black box and is set to be the Tequila to know about in 2024,” Tim Dunlop, European commercial director at Biggar and Leith, said in a news release.

“It’s no secret Tequila is booming. For specialist retailers, the new expression presents an opportunity to attract consumers into the ultra-premium sector at a time when the category is moving at pace and establishing itself in the home.”

Since hitting the market in 2021, Butterfly Cannon has made an impression on consumers with its eclectic, headline-grabbing range of tequila flavors.

The brand’s breakout hit was Butterfly Cannon Blue, described as the “world’s first color-changing tequila.” Bearing a deep violet hue, the clementine- and prickly pear-infused tequila turns bright pink when combined with mixers like tonic or lime. Despite a UK-centric launch, videos of the colorful spirit went viral worldwide shortly after its debut.

Butterfly Cannon has also released a pink grapefruit-infused Rosa expression and a charcoal-filtered Cristalino. With the launch of its new Reposado, Butterfly Cannon is finally foraying into the core trio of expressions that define the tequila category.
