Campari Group’s Ancho Reyes Liqueur is expanding its dark and spicy lineup with a new expression aged in ex-bourbon barrels.

Distilled from poblano peppers in the eastern city of Puebla, Mexico, Ancho Reyes Barrica aims to balance heat-and-sweet with oaky notes of dulce de leche, spiced vanilla, cinnamon and orange zest.

Ancho Reyes first hit the market in 2012, crafted from a 1920s-inspired recipe that combined neutral cane spirit with locally harvested sun-dried poblano peppers (known as ancho chiles). In the years since its launch, the liqueur has quickly established itself as a mixology staple across the country — a particular favorite in spicy margaritas and twists on the Bloody Mary.

The brand’s latest release is aged for two years in ex-bourbon American White Oak casks. All said and done, the end product may be more appropriate for solo sipping than cocktail mixing.

Ancho Reyes Barrica is a completely new type of barrel-aged liqueur that has the depth and complexity of Ancho Reyes Original but now as an elevated sipping spirit,” said Global Managing Director for Spirits at Campari Group, Raul Gonzalez.

“In Mexico, we often finish a dinner or a great meal with a drink shared amongst family and friends, and Barrica is the perfect sipping spirit to toast to that moment.”

Ancho Reyes Barrica is now available online at $62.50.
