Following the release of its Laphroaig Edition Añejo in 2022, the acclaimed distillers over at El Tesoro Tequila are back with another whiskey-finished treat.

The newest addition to the brand’s specialty cask-aged “Mundial Collection” is rested for twelve months in charred oak barrels that previously held Knob Creek Rye Whiskey for seven years. Retailing at $175 a bottle, the limited-edition drop is sure to be snatched up quickly by collectors when it hits liquor store shelves later this month.

“My brother Carlos and I are the students of our father and grandfather before us, who were both proud tequila traditionalists, yet pioneers of their time who were always experimenting,” said Jenny Camarena, master of operations for El Tesoro in a press release.

“The Mundial series allows us to pursue these creative paths in tequila, and the Knob Creek Rye edition is no different. The way that our delicate Añejo marries with the amazing full-bodied, bread pudding and spice flavors of the bourbon casks makes this fascinating tequila a delicious treat that we are incredibly proud to share.”

Tasting notes for the 40% ABV expression can be found below:

APPEARANCE: Wheat brown with golden tones. Full-bodied and well-rounded with essential oils.
AROMA: Cooked agave, peaches, bread, vanilla, caramel, pineapple, apple, cinnamon, leather, and delicate floral notes.
PALATE: Cooked agave, black pepper, cinnamon, dark chocolate, vanilla, orange peel, notes of oak and spices.
FINISH: Long, with lingering oak, spices, and mineral notes.

Alongside brands like Fortaleza and Tequila Tapatio, El Tesoro has handily established itself as one of the most sought-after, authentically made agave spirits on the market.

El Tesoro was founded in 1990 as a joint venture between the historied Camarena family and businessmen Robert J. Denton and Marilyn S. Smith. In 1999, the imprint was acquired by spirits giant Beam Suntory — in years since, El Tesoro has dipped its toes into specialty cask finishes utilizing Beam’s massive whiskey catalog.
