7 Best Blanco Tequilas for a Margarita in 2026

A great margarita lives or dies by its tequila. You can squeeze the finest Mexican limes, source the best orange liqueur and decorate the rim with any number of sweet, spicy or savory garnishes — but if the spirit is flat, your cocktail will be, too. Ideally, mixologists look for a blanco tequila with pronounced roasted agave flavor, enough backbone to hold its shape in the shaker and a clean, additive-free profile that complements, rather than overwhelms, the sweetness of the drink.

It just so happens that we know seven bottles perfect for the job.

1. Espero Blanco

ABV: 40% | Price: $26

A criminally underrated mixology tool if there ever was one, Espero Blanco is produced at the only distillery in Mexico owned and operated by a cooperative of agave farmers. Its flavor has a distinct and noticeably vegetal tilt, leaning into bursts of celery, chamomile and saline fruitiness that pair well with an extra-large squeeze of fresh lime juice. At around $25 for a full liter, it’s one of the most honest value buys in the category.

2. Siempre Tequila Plata

ABV: 40% | Price: $45

The use of Champagne yeast (an increasingly popular, though still rare ingredient in the tequila world) gives Siempre Plata a subtly effervescent, floral quality that lifts a margarita. Hints of black pepper and mint play particularly well inside spicy creations, while the estate-grown agave brings enough sweet fruit character to complement an orange liqueur. Start muddling your jalapaños, and you’ll be all good to go.

3. Cascahuin Blanco

ABV: 40% | Price: $50

Though Cascahuin has become synonymous with its experimental, high-end limited releases, the brand’s standard lineup always demands a shoutout. This is an agave lover’s tequila through and through, stuffed to the brim with roasty goodness, fresh grass notes and a truly buttery mouthfeel. Cascahuin’s classic Blanco is a beloved favorite for good reason, and a must-buy if you’re intimidated by the brand’s larger-than-life reputation.

4. Tequila Ocho Terroir Select Comunidad Plata

ABV: 40% | Price: $50

The first in a series celebrating local agave farmers, Tequila Ocho Terroir Select Plata makes use of a harvest grown in the community of El Nacimiento de Abajo, Jalisco. In signature Tequila Ocho fashion, the blanco is all about minerality, pairing hints of citrus pith and mist with a savory helping of wet soil, rosemary and faint black tea bitterness. So long as you don’t mind a spirit that plays on the dry and earthy side, this bottle has all the punch to stand out as a solo sipper and cocktail essential alike.

5. La Pulga Blanco

ABV: 40% | Price: $50

La Pulga’s bright grapefruit-and-anise personality is practically pre-built for a margarita. The herbaceous nose lends complexity without weight, and a drawn-out white pepper finish manages to cut through the noise of most cocktail creations. The brand was founded in 2020 by a trio of Fort Worth, Texas natives, who set out to create a liquid tribute to the historic Pequeño Mexico flea market in their city’s Northside.

6. Wild Common Blanco

ABV: 42% | Price: $65

The elevated 42% ABV and concentrated fruit character give Wild Common Blanco serious backbone in a cocktail. The flavor homes in on a potent combo of orange zest and black pepper, spaced out with hints of fresh flowers, brine and a surprising cinnamon note unlike other unaged offerings. If you’re willing to commit an extra few dollars, the brand’s Still Strength is also well worth checking out.

7. Caballito Cerrero Azul Blanco 46

ABV: 46% | Price: $75

Caballito Cererro is technically not a tequila, but rather a “destilado de agave” — the brand stepped away from official certification in 2018 to preserve traditional methods. The result: One of the boldest, smokiest and funkiest distillations of Blue Weber agave currently on the market. Heady flavors of ash, herbs and pineapple steal the show with a uniquely mezcal-like touch. Though this isn’t a standard Blanco (nor is it priced like one), it doesn’t get much better than Caballito Cerrero for a truly gourmet cocktail experience.
