New Additive-Free Tequila ‘Founded, Farmed, Distilled and Led by Women’ Hits the Market Nationwide

Founders Shivam Mallick Shah, Lindsey Davis Stover and Alison Kiehl have teamed up with master distiller Rocio Rodriguez to bring a new women-led ultra-premium tequila to market.
Available now for pre-order, 1953 Tequila is aged for 15 months in ex-bourbon American Oak barrels. The final product — contained in a sleek custom decanter retailing for $205 — is said to balance notes of caramel, vanilla, citrus and chocolate.
Fittingly, the brand’s four-digit name pays homage to the year that women in Mexico secured the right to vote — 10/17/1953, exactly 70 years prior to the tequila’s release date.
“The story of this tequila isn’t traditional, but paths for women rarely are. Today we couldn’t be more excited to introduce that story and this tequila to everyone who wants to purchase with purpose,” said Shivam Mallick Shah, founder and CEO of 1953 Tequila.
Though a growing number maestra tequileras have come onto the scene in the past decade, the agave spirits industry is still dominated almost entirely by male distillers and brand owners. Imprints like Casa Dragones, Mijenta Tequila and Yola Mezcal have sought to remedy that imbalance, now joined by newer brands like 1953 and La Gritona.
In keeping with its mission statement, 1953 has also committed to uplifting unionized labor and advanced environmental standards at its distillery headed up by Adriana Lopez.
