Drunken Kayak Journey Lands 2 ‘Grossly Intoxicated’ Individuals in Jail Cells

Last week, two drunk kayakers were arrested and momentarily held in jail cells to sober up after a tumultuous kayak journey through Lake Country in British Columbia, Canada.

According to a statement from the Lake Country RCMP, the incident came to the authorities’ attention on August 5 when a report was received regarding the presence of “grossly intoxicated” kayakers on Wood Lake. One of the men was reportedly discovered in an unconscious state in his kayak, while his companion attempted to come to his aid. This endeavor, however, resulted in the second kayaker losing his balance multiple times and falling into the water, reported Vancouver City News.

Soon after, the two briefly ventured back into the lake, traveling across both Wood Lake and Kalamalka Lake before making their way to Pioneer Park in Oyama. There, they encountered frontline officers who were waiting on the shore. The men’s unsteady and erratic movements as they approached their vehicle while carrying their kayaks led to their apprehension on charges of being impaired while operating a conveyance.

Commenting on the incident, Lake Country RCMP Corporal Ryder Birtwistle stated, “Both men were fortunate to not have fallen off their boats in either lake, as they were not wearing life jackets that were on board.”

After being held in jail cells to sober up, the two were issued tickets for public intoxication, per Vancouver City News.

Highlighting the fact that the outcome of this incident could have been drastically different, local law enforcement is emphasizing the importance of responsible behavior on waterways, Vancouver City News reported. Additionally, individuals are being advised that consuming alcohol while operating boats can result in penalties or legal action due to its prohibition — except in specific cases.
