Quintaliza

5-8 months
This is the 90-proof version of Quintaliza, a reposado tequila aged in ex-bourbon American white oak before finishing in barrels that previously held Arabica coffee beans. Reports vary on whether this was matured a total of five or eight months. The recipe is additive free and uses agaves grown in the highlands of Jalisco.

There’s a distinct aroma of coffee beans, but not as much as I would’ve guessed from the description. That bitter note combines with caramelized agave and butterscotch.
Oodles of roasted coffee coat the sides of the mouth, bringing with it layers of dark chocolate, tobacco, oak, ground earth and faint cinnamon. It’s such a robust combination, truly unlike anything I’ve ever tasted in a tequila before. Let it sit for a few minutes, and sweeter notes of agave and vanilla begin to shine through, as well.
A sharp prick of coffee and dark chocolate lingers, almost like some sort of pitch-black mocha. It’s all quite bitter and roasty. It feels as if I’ve just taken the last puff of a high-end cigar.
Exceptional stuff. The slightly higher proof point brings out gobs of chocolate, tobacco and oak flavor rarely seen in a reposado tequila. Even if you prefer tea over coffee, this is a sip you wont want to miss.
