The Macallan Scotch Toasts 200th Anniversary With Larger-Than-Life Villa in the Heart of Los Angeles

In honor of its 200th anniversary, famed whisky brand The Macallan is reaching across the pond to build an outpost in the hills of Los Angeles, California. The complex — dubbed The Macallan Villa — exudes the same waft of luxury that can be spotted in the distiller’s ultra-aged and often ultra-expensive bottlings.

Situated near the neighborhood of Bel Air, the grounds show off a smorgasbord of sleek concrete overhangs, grassy lawns and velvet chairs positioned beside modern art and an incomprehensible number of whisky bottles. Bar counters are aplenty. In one image, you can spot an infinity pool inscribed with an “M” logo that overlooks the city.

In other words, it’s a far, far reach from the brand’s inaugural 1824 distillery.

The villa is described as an invite-only brand home that will host activations for content creators, strategic partners and members of the distiller’s The Macallan Society. In a news release, the brand described curated cocktails featuring local South California ingredients and a food menu overseen by Chef Chris Sayegh.

Scotch will also feature prominently, of course. Throughout the grounds, a recent addition to the distiller’s Harmony Collection will reportedly take the spotlight. Helmed by fashion designer Stella McCartney and her sister, Mary McCartney, the Amber Meadow expression is aged in a mixture of sherry-seasoned oak and bourbon casks before being bottled at 44.2% ABV. It was said to have been inspired by the sister’s “fond memories” of the Scottish countryside, a landscape that the villa seeks the emulate.

The Macallan also plans to highlight “The Colour Collection,” an array of 12-year, 15-year, 18-year, 21-year and 30-year-old whiskies brought to life in collaboration with graphic designer David Carson. Down the road, the villa is expected to host launch events for new bottlings in the distiller’s ever-expanding catalog.

The Macallan Villa will be open by appointment beginning this fall; for more information, check out the distiller’s website here.
