I give you my personal permission to use it as a mixer if you promise to choose wisely and stay classy – think Manhattans and Old Fashioneds without any simple syrup or sweeteners added.
The palate is sugary-sweet, with molasses, pralines, coffee ice cream, Raisinets, and some bitter oak, and it finishes short. Keep an eye on your blood sugar when drinking this.

To be honest I wish they’d stop adding the spirit (port, sherry, rum, etc.) and just use the barrels. Let the KY and CAN rye whiskies marry in the barrels for a year give supporting hints without covering up so much of the rye goodness.
This is not going to be a whiskey for everyone. It’s incredibly sweet, almost syrupy at times, and many of the more classic whiskey elements are stomped into oblivion by the hefty dose of rum in the mix. And yet, it’s certainly got some wonderfully drinkable qualities… provided you like sweeter styles of rum, of course.
