Roundup: Every Tequila and Mezcal That Won a Double Gold Medal at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition

San Francisco World Spirits Competition

Tres Generaciones 50th Anniversary Añejo was one of many Double Gold awardees at the 2024 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The film industry has Oscars and the music industry the Emmys. In the world of liquor, it’s all about the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

First convened by the Tasting Alliance in 2000, the SFWSC has persisted for decades as the world’s largest spirits judging competition. This year, esteemed judges from across the world convened in California to sample dozens of alcohol categories ranging from vodka to liqueurs to soju. In total, over 5,000 entries were submitted to the competition. Though whiskey made up a lion’s share of the top winners, agave spirits like tequila and mezcal saw record-high levels of representation in this year’s awardees.

“In a time where the industry faces unique hurdles, we’re thrilled to see such a remarkable surge in participation,” Amanda Blue, president of The Tasting Alliance said. “Our commitment to impartiality and excellence remains unwavering, and these results reaffirm the industry’s trust in our process.”

What Are the Criteria?

SFSWC judges award spirits Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals. The description of what constitutes a Gold medal is: “Exceptional spirits that are near the pinnacle of achievement; these products set the standard for their categories.”

Double Gold medals sit a notch above Gold. These are spirits awarded a Gold Medal by every member of the over 50-person judging panel. Beyond Double Gold lies Best In Class, unveiled at the Top Shelf Gala in October, and Platinum, given to spirits that win Double Gold for three consecutive years. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.

This year, we counted 85 Double Gold winners across the tequila and mezcal categories. Selectees ranged from name-brand spirits like Don Julio and 1800 to niche mezcal varietals distilled with roasted corn and mole poblano. One sotol brand — Casa Lotos Blanco — was honored with Double Gold as well, though it’s technically agave-adjacent.
