On Tuesday, Robb Report announced that El Tequileño released its latest expression of an extra añejo that was aged in Jack Daniel’s barrels and is priced with a suggested retail price of $800 in limited markets.

The brand divided the distillate into three barrels, according to Robb Report. It chose two American oak barrels that were used to age the Tennessee whiskey and aged the tequila in them for three and four years. An additional French oak barrel was used to mature the remaining portion of the tequila for four years.

Third-generation Master Distiller Jorge Antonio “Tony” Salles and his father, Gran Tequilero Juan Antonio Salles worked on the project together, according to the brand.

Juan Antonio Salles claims the barrels were specially chosen to attain the perfect balance between agave and oak.

“We begin with only the finest mature agave from Los Altos de Jalisco, carefully crafted to produce the best possible tequila,” said Tony Salles in a statement from the brand via Robb Report. “Our special Extra Añejo blend was a collaboration between my father and me. Three barrels of tequila, matured in French and American oak, were hand-selected for their unique flavor and character. These were carefully blended to create an Extra Añejo tequila with rich flavor and complexity.”

This release follows El Tequileño’s latest milestone of winning Agave Producer of The Year at the 2023 International Spirits Competition in late October.

El Tequileño Extra Añejo is housed in a distinctive crystal bottle that appears to be inspired by the “penca” of a Blue Weber agave, according to the brand. Just 1,000 bottles are produced.
