The Dominican rum brand, Brugal, has recently announced the arrival of its newest addition to its portfolio, the Maestro Reserva. The Maestro Reserva utilizes an innovative cask-toasting technique developed by Brugal known as “dark aromatic toasting.”
Brugal family member and fifth-generation Maestra Ronera, Jassil Villanueva Quintana crafted the Maestro Reserva using the innovative toasting technique.
“My family deeply embraces the elegance and soul of Brugal rum, and I’ve absorbed a wealth of wisdom from the generations of Maestro Roneros who came before me,” shares Jassil Villanueva Quintana. “By leveraging this knowledge and my unwavering passion, all while paying homage to the Brugal family legacy, I’ve crafted a rum that is ‘moment perfect.’ My hope is that Maestro Reserva graces all of life’s big celebrations, alongside cherished ones, forging moments that will endure for centuries to come.”
The Maestro Reserva is first aged in American oak sherry casks. The rum is then emptied from the barrel and set aside for later refilling. The emptied casks are immediately toasted to extract natural “caramel” pearls that are formed from the sugars present. After, the casks are refilled so the rum can absorb the natural sweetness while aging further in the tropical climate. The rum contains no added sweeteners, colors or additives and is bottled at 41.2% ABV.
Tasting Notes According to the Brand
- Aroma: Rich aromas of oak, red fruits, and a hint of smoke balanced by caramel and honey
- Palate: Tastes of vanilla and caramel emerge then give way to subtle notes of dark chocolate and dried fruits, with a hint of toasted nuts. Slightly oaky and dry on the palate accompanied by red fruits, brown sugar, and orange peel.
- Finish: A smooth, rich and sweet vanilla creaminess with a touch of bitter brown sugar
This is not the first time Brugal has introduced a rum made with innovative cask toasting processes. Last year, Brugal introduced a special limited-edition rum from the Colección Visionaria which showcased an equally unique aromatic toasting technique. This method imparted flavors from cacao beans into used oak casks by toasting the beans inside the casks prior to filling them with rum.
Maestro Reserva has an SRP of $200 and will be available for purchase in the U.S. in Florida, Texas and New Jersey now and will expand to other select markets throughout the year.
