The Bloody Mars

Scorpio is the only sign associated with two planets, Mars and Pluto. This cocktail takes inspiration from the classic cocktail, bloody mary, and from Scorpio’s ruling planet of Mars. The drink is a vibrant red which is one of the colors associated with the astrological sign. This version of the bloody mary has the addition of basil which is the herb most tied with the Scorpio. It also uses another Mars plant with a bit of cayenne in the form of hot sauce for a pleasant burn.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces of tomato basil juice (blend tomato juice with a few leaves of basil)
  • 2 ounces of unaged rhum agricole or clairin 
  • 1 ounce Ancho Reyes chili ancho liqueur
  • ½ ounce pickle juice
  • ½ ounce Worcestershire sauce
  • A few dashes of cayenne hot sauce (as much or as little as desired for spice)
  • Garnish: tajin rim with basil leaves and spear of pickles and peppers

Recipe

First, coat the rim of a tall glass with lemon juice and then dip the rim into tajin to create the tajin rim. Add the tomato basil juice, rhum, chili liqueur, pickle juice, Worcestershire and hot sauce into the glass and then stir the ingredients together. Add ice and garnish with a few basil leaves and a spear of pickles and peppers.

The rum rye rush is a flavor riff of the whiskey cocktails, the gold rush and the penicillin. However, this cocktail contains rum and rye whiskey as its star ingredients. Rye is representative of the planet Pluto, the other ruling planet of Scorpio. A flavor often linked with Scorpio is ginger for its stingy bite quality. This drink is an enticing combo of honey sweet with a touch of heat perfect for the complex Scorpio. 

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce rye whiskey 
  • 1 ounce aged rum 
  • ¾ ounce fresh lemon juice
  • ½ ounce honey syrup (1:1 honey and water)
  • ¼ ounce ginger syrup 
  • Garnish: lemon peel

Recipe

Add the rye whiskey, aged rum, lemon juice, honey syrup and ginger syrup into a glass with a large ice cube. Stir until the glass becomes chilled. Garnish with a twisted lemon peel placed on the rim of the glass.

The drink combines the hibiscus with ginger to make it slightly piquant. The color is an alluring maroon which is another warm color associated with this zodiac sign. 

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces light rum
  • 1 ounce hibiscus ginger syrup (recipe here)
  • 1 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • Garnish: lemon peel or dried hibiscus flower

Recipe

Add rum, hibiscus ginger syrup and lemon juice into a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously for about 8 seconds or until the shaker becomes cold. Double strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a lemon peel or a delicately placed dried hibiscus flower.
