Whiskey’s Marianne Eaves Takes on Rum With New Florida Distillery, Otherland Society
Whiskey industry veteran Marianne Eaves is leaping into a new industry, joining the newly established rum distillery, Otherland Society in Pahokee, Florida, as a blender. The company’s first release is the Wild Hare Dark Rum, which launched earlier this year and was blended by Eaves.
Eaves is Kentucky’s first female master distiller since American Prohibition. She worked as a master taster for Brown-Forman, the company behind one of the biggest names in bourbon, Old Forester. Afterward, Eaves became master distiller for Castle & Key until pivoting her career to become a consultant on projects including Peyton Manning’s and Andy Roddick’s bourbon brand, Sweeten’s Cove and Scottie Pippen’s bourbon, Savage & Cooke Distillery. Otherland Society is her first venture with rum.
Eaves has blended 8-year-old South American rum with ten-year-old Caribbean rum to create the Wild Hare Dark Rum. The rum launched in June as a preferred partner for the first Michelin Guide in Florida.

According to Forbes, Eaves describes this rum as, “a nice balance of a lighter, sweeter style of rum with a more full-bodied style. It’s a rum that drinks like a bourbon. People can enjoy it neat, or with ice, or in pretty much any traditional bourbon cocktail. Bourbon turns some people off because it can be hot and robust, but this rum has a fruity sweetness that people will really enjoy.”
Co-Founder Donia Roberts plans to revitalize rural Palm Beach County with Otherland Society which is currently being built out to Eaves’ specifications. Roberts and her family are fourth generation sugarcane farmers and their future plans for the rum intend to take advantage of Florida local sugar industry. Currently, they are not producing their own rum so they are relying on sales of the rum blended by Eaves.
The Wild Hare Dark Rum is currently available for pre-order on the company’s site. It will be interesting to see what Marianne Eaves brings to the rum world as this new project gains momentum.
