Big, bold, rich nose with gobs of sweet oak, tobacco, baked apple and rye bread, brown sugar and just a hint of fruit and pepper. This is Penelope’s oldest bourbon by far, and the extra oak and complexity on the nose is welcome. No ethanol.
Rich on the palate. Proofy but satisfying, it doesn’t exactly drink like it’s high-proof, but it won’t sneak up on you, either. Heavy brown butter, brown sugar, caramelized sugar and a pop of baking spice. Oaky palate that’s well integrated, with lots of complexity.
Long finish that’s light on the oak and heavy on the tobacco, apple butter, brown sugar and toffee.
Strong showing from Penelope with a killer release that’s worth tracking down. If this new look for Penelope is here to stay, whiskey lovers everywhere are in for a treat.
