On Oct. 24, The Glenlivet announced a new collaboration with the Indian-American designer, Bibhu Mohapatra, to create a haute couture gown in celebration of the movers and shakers within the South Asian community during Diwali.

The collaboration is what the brand refers to as a “visual manifesto” of The Glenlivet’s goals to break down barriers. The gown will be auctioned with a bottle of The Glenlivet 25 Year Old to support The Asian American Writer’s Workshop and the scotch brand will release a “Brighten The Holidays” gift set with South Asian-owned brands that is available on ReserveBar.

“As South Asians, we know that single malt scotch whisky is a staple during convivial moments like Diwali, which was once relatively unknown and only celebrated by us with our families,” Pernod Ricard Senior Vice President North America, Communications and S&R and New York Diwali Gala Host Committee Member Anu Rao said in a statement. “I’m beyond proud that The Glenlivet is shining a light on the progress of South Asian culture, with the rise of Diwali as a mainstream holiday celebration and the elevation of South Asian fashion with the fabulous Bibhu Mohapatra.”

Mohapatra is a New Yorker and multi-award-winning haute couture designer, whose style inspiration is drawn from global travel and his home country, India. Mohapatra chose to use India’s most sumptuous silks and fabrics, with crystals and sequins meant to represent a firework show during the celebration of Diwali.

“I am thrilled to come together with The Glenlivet to create an item that speaks to such a beautiful, celebratory occasion,” Mohapatra said in a statement. “Diwali reminds us of the victory of light over darkness and is a time to reflect on our pursuit of progress over the past year. It has been so special for me to interpret these important themes into a gown for this year’s gala.”

The gown will be modeled by Pritka Swarup at the 2023 New York Diwali gala. Swarup founded Pratki Beauty, an India-inspired beauty line. After the gown is unveiled, it will be auctioned with a bottle of The Glenlivet 25 Year Old to support the Asian American Writers’ Workshop. The auction will start on Nov. 7 and is set to run until Nov. 21.

The Brighten The Holidays offering from The Glenlivet will include a bottle of The Glenlivet 14 Year Old, a D.S & Durga candle, Panna Coasters from SONA Home, a recipe for a Diwali-inspired cocktail and a poem written by Samira Asama- Sadeque from the Asian American Writers’ Workshop.

More on Diwali — a ‘Festival of Lights’

The Diwali Hindu festival of lights is meant to celebrate, “the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and the human ability to overcome,” according to Spectrum News New York.

The Hindu American Foundation cites Diwali as the day that Prince Rama of Ayodhya, his wife Sita, and his brother Lakshman return after 14 years of exile. Prince is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu – the god of goodness – and Sita is the human incarnation of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

Those who celebrate Diwali light a lamp every night to remember that good overcomes evil and light triumphs over darkness.

Diwali will start on Nov. 12, 2023.
