WhistlePig The Boss Hog X: The Commandments is the 10th installment in WhistlePig's annual Boss Hog series. Commandments is Canadian rye whiskey finished in two types of unusual barrels. The first contained an unorthodox spirit that WhistlePig distilled from rye and whey and infused with aromatic resins from Boswellia and Commiphora trees. After being finished in American new oak and those resin barrels, The Boss Hog X was matured in craft mead casks.

  • This is a good whiskey but leans a little too much toward a major trend’s flavor profile (amburana). Realistically, that’ll be gone in a year’s time. And in this case, the rye gets a little lost in the mix.

  • As with last year’s Siren’s Song bottling, there’s nothing not to like here, but the experience has absolutely nothing in common with any rye you’ve had before. I love it.

  • I would go so far as to call this release a work of blending and distilling art.

  • Totally unusual rye that’s lovely to drink, wild to take part in and complex beyond expectation. Unreal experimentation that works here and demands a pour if ever you see one.

  • Nose:

Powerful and loaded with clover honey, cider, pleasant acidity, black tea, sweet oak and a dash of pine and maple

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate with a syrupy texture. Packed again with clover honey, lemon and lime, pepper and pleasant slate and pine. Lovely oak integration, punchy rye spice and intriguing floral sweetness.

  • Finish:

Long finish. Lemon and honey burst, followed by sweet oak, cream and pepper.

  • Overall:

Totally unusual rye that’s lovely to drink, wild to take part in and complex beyond expectation. Unreal experimentation that works here and demands a pour if ever you see one.
