A brand founded in 2023, Mary Dowling was created by Rabbit Hole Distillery founder Kaveh Zamanian as a tribute to Mary Dowling, whom the brand is hailing as "the mother of bourbon."

One of two debut expressions from Mary Dowling, this bourbon is distilled from a mashbill of 70% corn, 25% malted rye and 5% malted barley. Bottled at 93 proof, the expression was finished in barrels that held sacrificial sherry for one year, Oloroso sherry for four years, Vin Doux Naturel (a dessert wine) for two years and finally Reposado tequila. The tequila finish is an ode to Dowling, who moved her distilling operation to Juarez, Mexico, in order to continue production during Prohibition.

  • Nose:

Fresh fruit and honey, char and toffee, light apple sweetness and a faint pop of agave. Mostly bourbon and big spice with a touch of agave

  • Taste:

Moderate mouthfeel with honey, char, toffee, cocoa and agave come together. The tequila notes present nicely and subtly — definitely for the best. Sweet cream, praline, honey.

  • Finish:

The finish is short, and I think this is a win for the pour. It's complex with lots going on, but it doesn't hang on your palate, which I think works best for tequila-finished pours.

  • Overall:

Honestly, quite nice. This is well-integrated, fun, complex and easy to enjoy. Strong work, Mary
