This 10-year-old whiskey comes from the Brooklyn-based Widow Jane. Decadence is a 10-year-old bourbon finished in maple syrup barrels, which is a fun concept. The fear with a pour like this — a sweet spirit finished in syrup — is overbearing sweetness, so let's see how Widow Jane does in terms of balance.

  • The nuttiness and the baking spices are in harmony with maple syrup. Just a decadent delight.

  • This may be one of the best, balanced maple finishes on the regularly available market these days, and it's easy to enjoy even if a sweet whiskey isn't your jam.

  • The taste has a good balance between sweetness and spice, with maple syrup, honey, and candied fruits complemented by touches of cinnamon and nuts.

  • Overall, not super complex, but an enjoyable drink. You could add a rock in a glass and call it a day.

  • Nose:

Heavy baking spice on the nose, it's all bourbon first with a pinch of maple sweetness. Oak, toffee, maple, spice, a pinch of raisin bread.

  • Taste:

The palate is where the maple starts to integrate and shine — this pour is tannic and dry up front with clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, toffee and a hint of maple syrup sweetness. Pleasant viscosity — a touch thin, but pleasant enough.

  • Finish:

The finish shows the maple pop the most, long and sweet with baking spice and maple syrup trading blows in a balanced, savory and sweet pour.

  • Overall:

With maple finishes, I'm always a little worried that it's going to be a syrupy-sweet sugar bomb. Fears averted. This may be one of the best, balanced maple finishes on the regularly available market these days, and it's easy to enjoy even if a sweet whiskey isn't your jam.
