  • The funk showcases the rye’s age, adding an interesting layer of complexity to the whiskey’s more dominant sweet-spicy mix.

  • It's not as well blended as I might hope a rye at this price would be, but at its core, it's a vibrant, tropical rye that shows 11-year whiskey can still have pop and vibrance to it.

  • Nose:

Sweet and rich, packed with rye spice, honey, caramel, burnt sugar, pineapple and some baking spice. This has a ton going on — it's really distinctive and quite layered. Tons happening.

  • Taste:

Rich on the palate — there's a lot going on here, as well. Bold, powerful, rye spice jumps up first. It's herbal, spicy, flavorful, dry and tannic. The rum pops in from time to time, bringing with it tropical fruits, some fun estery pop, pineapple, mango, etc. It's a bit hot, a surprise for the age and proof, and the tannin is quite powerful as well. The rye and rum seem to be at odds with each other, a tense tug of war.

  • Finish:

Long finish, hot and punchy, spicy and rye forward with no looking back. It's punchy and powerful, and fans of herbal ryes will be satisfied; a soft maple bomb this is not.

  • Overall:

This is an interesting release from Kentucky Owl. It's not as well blended as I might hope a rye at this price would be, but at its core, it's a vibrant, tropical rye that shows 11-year whiskey can still have pop and vibrance to it.
