  • An approachable rye for those getting into the category but perhaps not big enough for proper cocktailing or complex enough for the diehard rye lover.

  • A well executed rye whiskey with some darker and richer flavors, and I’d love to see with a version with a little extra time in a barrel.

  • I'm once again incredibly pleased with how well this North Carolina whiskey drinks; it seems evident to me that they've got all of the important pieces of making good whiskey figured out.

  • The Southern Star Double Rye isn’t a sexy whiskey or a wallflower. It holds its own pretty well in the highly crowded rye category, though you’ll likely want to ask for a pour off the back bar before you get a bottle.

  • Overall, Southern’ Star’s Double Rye drinks very approachably for a new brand, and their whiskey is well on its way to being a good shelf offering for a variety of palates. Once they tackle the youthful woodiness, it’s game on.

  • Nose:

Impressive combination of honey, spice, bold pepper, clove, ginger and a touch of barrel char.

  • Taste:

A touch young and certainly a big hit of young wood, but there’s plenty of peanut butter frosting, caramel, candied apples and some rock candy to keep things interesting.

  • Finish:

Medium finish, aggressively woody but sweet and pleasant once the oak dies down a touch. Candied pecans, salted caramel, some pleasant honey.
