  • What’s funny is that the Port character is relatively lacking here — I get an impression more akin to sweet white wine than a fortified red.

  • While it’s definitely unique for a HP release I’m not crazy about it and don’t really see how it fits the fire moniker outside of the great looking bottle and case.

  • It's a tough sell for the price, but if your friend is buying, it's one to give a shot.

  • I know that I like this whisky. However, just how much I like the dram remains elusive.

  • Nose:

Creamy brown sugar, malt, cocoa and a touch of cinnamon and stewed fruits.

  • Taste:

Caramel and honey. Not a ton, but some cocoa, light cinnamon. Zesty orange peel, rising bread, light cherry and cranberry notes. Peppery and fairly viscous.

  • Finish:

Long finish. Malt forward, followed by some hints of wine. Great malt character, nice tannin, faint spice and sweetness.

  • Overall:

Pretty darn enjoyable. It's not going to turn any heads among some of Highland Park's truly epic bottlings without the packaging, but it's a great sip and shows that port can be used to enhance and not cover the base malt. It's a tough sell for the price, but if your friend is buying, it's one to give a shot.
