Oaklore Story Series: Port Cask Finished Four Grain Bourbon is a North Carolina-based whiskey produced under the Oaklore Distilling Co. label using bourbon sourced from sister distilleries in Kentucky and North Carolina. The mashbill is 70% corn, 10% rye, 10% wheat and 10% malted barley, aged a minimum of six years, then finished for 12 to 18 months in freshly dumped domestic port wine barrels that previously held port for up to 18 years. It is bottled at 92 proof (46% ABV) with a suggested retail price of $79.95.

Well balanced nose. Plenty of jammy port layered atop a decadent bourbon profile of cheesecake, crème brûlée, orange peel and gingerbread.
The palate has a drying viscosity and a flavor profile that’s nuanced and well balanced: Graham cracker, caramel, grape-heavy port, cinnamon, pepper, medicinal cherry, lemon peel, honey.
Lightly drying and quite earthy, woody and spice-forward. Cocoa, cinnamon, clove lead into rhubarb, cherry, a touch of wormwood and lemon peel.
Finishing bourbon in port casks is not my favorite practice in the whiskey world, but this is a quality version of it. The port doesn’t entirely drown out the distillate, and the finish wears itself well on Oaklore’s whiskey.
