Mac-Talla Strata is a 15-year-old Islay single malt Scotch whisky bottled by Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers, sourced from an undisclosed distillery on the Isle of Islay. It is matured in a combination of bourbon and Oloroso sherry casks, giving it a smoky, maritime character with sherried fruit and winter spice notes, per the brand. The whisky is bottled at 46% ABV, is non-chill filtered with no added color and retails for around $75-$100 USD.
Palate of fruitcake, layered with mint, menthol, and vibrant leafiness, a finish of sweet peat, ripe pear, and pipe smoke, tropical fruits, and golden syrup.
Medium, mouth-filling. A fruitcake richness, with barbecue coals and smoked herbs. Diluted elderflower cordial. Candied citrus peel. Honey and Greek yoghurt with toasted almonds. Stewed plum.
Initially smoky mouthfeel which soon opens up to an unexpected freshness, where balsamic touches wink at herbaceous impressions where barley is very present, accompanied by fruity tones, milk chocolate, toffee, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom).
I get a charred smoked meat note like the bitterness sometimes found of heavily charred brisket burnt ends, especially with some time in the glass. The citrus is still there, although very much in the background; however the palate is more peat-dominated than the nose would lead you to believe. The bourbon maturation has provided a light creaminess and some vanilla to the experience.
