Released in June 2026, Mount Gay 15-Year-Old is one of two releases in the brand's new Exceptionally Aged collection, a series that may or may not see more bottlings down the road.

Distilled on a single column still by former Master Blender Jerry Edwards, stewardship later passed to former Master Blender Allen Smith and then to current Master Blender Trudiann Branker. The rum was matured in ex-bourbon American oak casks, non-chill filtered and bottled at 43% ABV. Just 4.942 bottle were released to the public at a suggested retail price of $90 each. Let's dig in!

  • The palate doesn't skew quite as sweet as the aroma suggests, instead leaning into a coffee meets dark chocolate mocha vibe paired with plenty of tangy grapefruit zest. Hints of coconut cream, leather, nutmeg and a faint trace of ginger emerge after a few minutes of breathing time in the glass.

  • Some wood is in the forefront but is kept from being too oaky by a robust rum distillate. Notes of pie crust, bitter cocoa, light roast coffee bean, mild banana taffy and brown bread make this a pensive spirit.

  • Things are a bit more austere on the palate, which settles into a slightly winey groove that’s backed up by ample barrel char and overtones of cocoa powder and ground coffee, the spice hitting a bit more savory, with a cardamom quality and a pinch of saffron.

  • The entry is smooth, controlled, and immediately oakforward, with a warming hit of caramel and vanilla setting the tone. The coconut from the nose makes a brief appearance here too, adding a creamy edge that works nicely with the dried fruit.

  • Nose:

The nose opens with a welcome blast of orchard fruit, raisins and vanilla bean, underlined by a nostalgic milk chocolate note somewhere between Tootsie Rolls and malted milk balls.

  • Taste:

The palate doesn't skew quite as sweet as the aroma suggests, instead leaning into a coffee meets dark chocolate mocha vibe paired with plenty of tangy grapefruit zest. Hints of coconut cream, leather, nutmeg, port wine and a faint trace of ginger emerge after a few minutes of breathing time in the glass. It says "Exceptionally Aged" on the bottle, but I'd say this is far from over oaked.

  • Finish:

A drawn-out finish wraps up on a drying pepper note, with a nice lick of sweetness added by hints of prunes, cinnamon and Bundt cake.

  • Overall:

A treat for rum lovers of all kinds. It's nowhere near as potent or funky as Mount Gay's phenomenal Single Estate series, nor does it have the friendly tropical offhandedness I associate with Eclipse. Instead, this is a brawny, pleasantly bittersweet and altogether accessible bottling, the kind that should feel right at home for anyone who enjoys late-fall apple picking or s'mores sprinkled with a couple pinches of baking spice.
