Cedar Ridge The QuintEssential American Single Malt is made from 100% two-row pale malted barley at Cedar Ridge Distillery in Swisher, Iowa. The whiskey is aged in ex-bourbon barrels for 2-5 years, then finished in up to 20 different cask types including wine, port, brandy, rum and sherry casks before being married using a solera vatting system. It is bottled at 92 proof and typically sells for around $60. This expression was released in 2019.

  • Very sherry-heavy but well balanced expression. The peat is subtle, which is very hard to do.

  • Nose:

Very bright on the nose — lots of orchard fruit. Granny Smith apples, pears. Lightly smoky but not at all overwhelmingly so. Also some red fruit — cranberries, raspberries, caramel.

  • Taste:

Salted caramel, graham cracker, waffle cone.

  • Finish:

Big sherry influence on the finish. Lots of jammy red fruits and some tobacco.

  • Overall:

Very sherry-heavy but well balanced expression. The peat is subtle, which is very hard to do.
