Remus Master Distiller Experimental Series No. 2 is a straight wheat whiskey distilled in 2017 at Ross & Squibb Distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. It features a mash bill of 95% wheat and 5% malted barley and is finished in a combination of tawny port, white port, oloroso sherry and ruby port casks.
Bottled at 56.5% ABV, it typically retails for $69.99.
The palate is quite wine-forward and very sweet — Stirsman is totally correct about its finishing capabilities — showing a mix of raisiny Port and nuttier, more citrusy sherry notes, both of which dominate the tasting experience from the start.
High malty, port driven notes are mouthwatering on the nose. On the palate entry the port essence continues with a heavy patina of flavor taking the lead role. The wheated whiskey plays more of a supporting role with it’s softness.
