“Breaking Bad” alum Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul are expanding and refreshing their mezcal brand, Dos Hombres, with a duo of tequila releases.

On Wednesday, the acclaimed TV actors announced the launch of their first tequilas, Dos Hombres Blanco and Reposado. The spirits are made using 100% Blue Weber agave cooked in a combination of autoclaves and traditional brick ovens, crushed via roller mill and open-air fermented for up to 30 days. Production will be overseen at the Tequilera Tap Distillery — the very same behind Matthew McConaughey’s Pantalones Tequila — in Amatitán, Jalisco.

An added bonus for American whiskey fans: The brand’s Reposado is aged for four months in ex-bourbon barrels from Four Roses, a distiller whose casks are scarcely used in the tequila world save for one-off, limited-edition releases.

Tequila is the natural next step for Dos Hombres and emphasizes our passion and appreciation for agave spirits. We did a great deal of research, visited multiple sites and fell in love with the people, products and craftsmanship at Tequilera Tap Distillery,” Cranston said in a news release.

Though several celebrity-backed spirits brands — George Clooney’s Casamigos and LeBron James’ Lobos 1707 among them— have made the jump from tequila to mezcal, rarely does the switch happen in the other direction.

Paul and Cranston launched Dos Hombres in 2019, around the time when Americans were leveling up their agave spirits interest beyond margaritas and bottles of Jose Cuervo. The brand debuted with an Espadin mezcal distilled in San Luis del Rio, Oaxaca, and later rolled out a high-end Tobala mezcal that costs a dizzying $300 on the resale market.

“Following a fun and expansive tasting process, we landed on a tequila that is smooth, approachable and beautifully balanced,” Paul said. “It captures the spirit, energy and experience we want people to feel with every pour.

All of the above will receive a packaging refresh. Dos Hombres is reimagining its bottle and label designs from the ground up, rolling out a retinkered logo and a bold color scheme. From here on out, Dos Hombres Blanco will feature a light blue label, Dos Hombres Reposado a red label and Dos Hombres Mezcal an orange label.

We’re fascinated to see what comes of the change. The Tequilera TAP distillery is one of our favorite names on the market, responsible for a small but mighty roster of brands including Tres Agaves, Hijole! and additive-free favorite Cazcanes. Though it’s impossible to say just yet whether that quality will carry over into Dos Hombres, it’s promising that Cranston and Paul found a distillery worth its salt.

Dos Hombres Blanco and Reposado are slated to roll out nationwide on May 1 at a suggested retail price of $39.99 and $49.99, respectively.
