Old Ezra 7-Year Straight Rye Whiskey is produced by Lux Row Distillers using whiskey distilled at MGP Distillery in Indiana. It features a unique blend of two rye mashbills, one with 51% rye and another with 95% rye, both aged for seven years. It is bottled at full proof of 114 proof (57% ABV) and retails for around $80.
There are no such concerns on the palate, mind you. Here you’ll find a burst of sweetness that quickly builds and evokes notes of fresh tobacco leaf and dill, then a dusky graphite quality late in the game. The finish feels a bit off, slightly skunky and a touch weedy, qualities which are often endemic to rye but which here come across as a little overbearing.
There is a lovely hit of what seems like a spiced honey that first hits your tongue. This is followed by a sweet touch of vanilla and caramel, followed up with a spiced tobacco hint.
