Unveiled on Oct. 30, 2025, Templeton Single Barrel Rye is a limited-edition release from the Iowa-based craft distillery, Templeton. This is the inaugural house-distilled rye whiskey from Templeton, which was founded in 2006 and exclusively sourced whiskey from MGP in Indiana until 2024, when it released its first homemade bourbon.
Now, Templeton has its first homemade rye, distilled from a 95% rye, 5% malted barley mashbill, aged for an undisclosed period in charred new American oak barrels and bottled at barrel proof (the bottle we tasted had an ABV of 59.8%). It has a suggested retail price of $49.99.
Templeton found itself embroiled in controversy in 2015 when multiple class-action lawsuits were filed accusing the brand of misleading consumers about the origins of its whiskeys (Iowa vs. Indiana). In 2018, the brand opened a distillery and began distilling its own spirits. According to Templeton, this whiskey is the result of the first barrels of rye whiskey the distillery laid down.
So, in a way, this release marked something of a full-circle moment for Templeton the brand known for its rye whiskeys, once accused of falsely implying its products were made in Iowa, now releasing its first rye whiskey made in Iowa.

Peppery and herbaceous, this rye comes across as your typical 95/5 rye on the nose: dill, spearmint, pepper.
Nice viscosity with a good bit of heat on the papalte. Giner, peppermint, dill, clove, brown sugar.
Clove, cinnamon, cracked pepper, anise and clove.
This is a big, herbaceous rye whiskey that's jam-packed full of spice. A bit one-note but good, this rye would work great in a Sazerac or other cocktail. I’d love to taste it with a few more years of age.
