Boulevardier

About This Cocktail

The Boulevardier is a three-ingredient classic that applies the Negroni’s equal-parts formula to whiskey. Instead of gin, the base spirit is bourbon or rye, joined by sweet vermouth and Campari. The result is a cocktail that balances sweetness, bitterness and oak-driven depth in a direct, spirit-forward format. While often grouped with aperitifs because of Campari’s bitter orange profile, the Boulevardier drinks richer and weightier than its gin-based counterpart.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz Whiskey (Bourbon or rye)
  • 1 oz Sweet Vermouth
  • 1 oz Campari

Instructions

  1. Add ingredients to a mixing glass with ice and stir for 20-30 seconds.
  2. Strain into a coupe or martini glass or over a large ice cube in a rocks glass. Garnish with an orange twist.

Additional Instructions & Suggestions

Bourbon vs. Rye: Bourbon creates a softer, sweeter profile. Rye sharpens the edges and highlights the bitter notes.

Adjusting proportions: For a less bitter build, increase the whiskey slightly (1.25 oz) and reduce Campari to 0.75 oz. If you prefer it more spirit-forward, you can bump the whiskey up to 1.5 oz or 2 oz.
