Madre Mezcal Artesanal Ensamble is produced by the Garcia Morales family at their palenque in San Dionisio, Oaxaca. This expression blends Espadín and Cuishe agave, which is hand-harvested, cooked in an earth pit, crushed with a tahona, fermented with wild yeast and distilled in a copper pot still. It rests at 45% ABV and retails for around $50.
Overall, I think that Madre Mezcal Artesanal Ensamble Flask is a truly special mezcal. The flavors really took me on a journey – both when sipped and inside a cocktail. I was blown away! This bottle gets an easy 5 stars, and I highly recommend it to folks looking for a good mezcal joven.
The finish feels perhaps a bit overripe, with some greenness around the edges that leads to a touch of astringency on the fade-out, but that’s a fairly minor complaint against a product that is otherwise a stellar example of a punchier style of mezcal.
